Upcoming Dates / Reminders:

  • Lochside's 50+ anniversary celebration is coming up next week on June 1st. Our Antique Roadshow items have started to arrive. Remember you have the rest of this week to bring in your item so your child can share about it with the class. So far we had 4 friends share a suitcase, 2 books, a recipe box, and a doll, all around 50 years old like Lochside. We are keeping the items in our classroom this week and they will be put on display for the celebration next week. Don't forget to hand in the information page with the item so it can be displayed with it. I'll attach it below in case you need another copy.
  • Book Exchange is on Thursday.
  • Read Around the Room is on Friday, but it will be a little different this week, 'Make Around the Room.' All parents/guests welcome to help us create and build our robots for the 50th celebration. I will have all the donated supplies spread out with some glue available. Hot glue will be available but only for the adults to use. We will start right away once we come in and will keep working until we finish! Come for part of all of it. We started reading robot books today to gather ideas and inspiration for our creations on Friday.
  • Thank you for the donated items for our makerspace robots. We are still looking for donations! Empty out your recycling bins and send items in to the classroom this week ready for Friday's activity. Here's some ideas:
- tin cans & lids
- plastic lids
- nuts and bolts
- springs
- tin foil pie plates (small and large)
- foil
- duct tape (gray)
- silver spray paint
- bottle caps
- plastic or paper cups
- buttons
- pipe cleaners
- toilet paper rolls
- plastic or paper cups
- pop can tabs
- beads
- felt or foam shapes
- googly eyes (any size)
- small cardboard boxes (e.g. cereal boxes, kleenex boxes, etc)

If you have any of these items to donate or something else you think would work for our robots, please send it to school with your child clean with no sharp edges. We will pool all of the materials and see what the children create with them. If I can have the donations by Wednesday, May 25th, that would be great but will certainly accept more donations up to the day. Send them in as you find these items around the house.

  • We won a field trip! A few weeks ago the Ocean Discovery Centre was having a competition to win a free field trip. We made a video to show why we love the ocean and we won! Our field trip is on June 8th. We will be needing parent drivers for this trip. A notice will be going home this week.
  • Our year end all day field trip with all of our Kindergarten friends will be happening on Thursday, June 16th at Island View Beach. Save the date and plan to join us! (More details will be coming in June)
  • Sidney Elementary School is hosting the SD63 screening of the ground-breaking educational documentary 'Most Likely to Succeed' (MLTS) this Thursday, May 26th at 6:30. We invite and encourage all educators, colleagues, parents, and friends to attend this must-see film. There is a maximum capacity of 350 people, doors open at 6 pm and we are suggesting a $5/person donation to cover the film screening rights. The film has a running time of 86 minutes. I saw this film at UVic a couple of months ago and highly recommend it. I found it very thought-provoking, especially as we move into our new redesigned curriculum in September. The film looks at the past, the present, and the future of education. You can check out the website of the film to view a trailer for it here.

Classroom News:

  • This week our sign-in is going to focus on the numbers 7, 8, and 9. We will talk about forming them correctly and practice this too.
  • We will be working on a piece of art and writing for the 50th anniversary this week. We have been looking at pictures about 50 years old of Lochside and around Lochside. We are going to imagine what we might look like and how life might be for us in 50 years. When we write, this will be 100% student-led. We have been talking about invented spelling and how we might now know how to spell a lot of words so when we are learning, invented spelling is okay. Students have been really excited to create their own books during centres and I've noticed a lot of writing going into these books, 100% student-led.
  • We are continuing kick ball this week in gym. We will play some warm-up games, play some introductory kick ball games, and begin to learn the rules of kick ball.
  • Our butterflies have gone but we continue to learn about them. Today we read a book and looked at pictures and realized that butterflies are the same on the left as they are on the right. We also learned that butterflies are very colourful insects. In our observational drawings book, we added a drawing of a butterfly today.
  • We continue to learn about 2D shapes this week. We are learning the names and notices how many sides each shape has.
