Upcoming Dates / Reminders:
- A special notice went home about Lochside's 50+ year anniversary. Lochside started around '62/'63. We are asking the Ks to bring in something that is about 50 years old and we will put it on display during the first week of June when Lochside has the celebration.
- Book Exchange is on Thursday. Please return library books before then as well as the poem duotangs if they are still at home.
- Read Around the Room is on Friday. All parents/guests welcome.
- No School on Monday for Victoria Day. See you on Tuesday!
- A new special helper job started last week (this is our final rotation). The job this time is to take home Mr. Bear and let him have a sleepover. He can join your child with the evening's activities. There is a paper to draw his adventures and a spot to write about it too. Bring Mr. Bear and the sheet back to school the next day so we can add it to our class book.
- We won a field trip! A few weeks ago the Ocean Discovery Centre was having a competition to win a free field trip. We made a video to show why we love the ocean and we won! I'll post the video so you can see it. Our field trip is on June 8th. We will be needing parent drivers for this trip. A notice will be going home next week.
- Book order forms went home last week. Please have your orders in by Thursday so we can put the order in before the weekend. I believe this will be our last order this year.
Classroom News:
- We are finishing up our letters this week with Yy and Xx.
- In our Journal time we are continuing to enjoy the children to add details to their drawings to convey their message and also encourage them to start to write. I encourage them to give it a try, even if they don't know how to spell a word, 'invented spelling' is okay.
- We are starting kick ball in gym this week. We will play some warm-up games, talk about the bases, practice running the bases, and play some introductory kick ball games.
- We have a new invitation during centers. A 2D shape station has been set-up with geoboards and elastics. What shapes can you make? We saw some squares and triangles today. We will start to talk about the 2D shapes we know this week.
- Over the weekend one butterfly emerged from its chrysalid. During the day 4 more emerged. We will continue to watch them closely this week and use this experience to learn about the butterfly life cycle. Last week we talked about the plant life cycle. At the end of the week we will set our butterflies free. Today we noticed what we saw: a butterfly, some chrysalids, and food (flowers and oranges). We wrote down what we thought: 'The butterfly drying its wings because it is flapping them and trying to fly' and 'It's gooey inside the chrysalid.' We wrote down what we wondered: 'How do they shed their skin? after noticing the exoskeleton inside the container the caterpillars came in, after Miss Norris showing the chrysalids wiggle when moved to the butterfly habitat, we wondered if they were wiggling because it takes a long time to come out. 'Wiggling means they are staying in a bit longer' and 'Do they nibble the chrysalid to get out?'
- To get ready for Lochside's 50+ celebration we will be talking about change in the classroom. Perfect timing as we watched our caterpillars change into butterflies.
