We had our bus safety field trip with Mr. Miller and Mr. Barnes today.  We learned about how to get safely on the bus, found all the emergency exits, practised safely getting off the bus and how to properly cross in front of the bus to cross the road.  The children sat very well during our short trip and showed Mr. Barnes what to do if he needs to stop suddenly. A pamphlet will be coming home this week about bus safety.  We are ready for our Galey Farms field trip on the bus!

Upcoming Dates / Reminders:

  • Book Exchange is on Thursday.  I reminded the students today that it is best to return library books early as last week we had a lot of forgotten books.  If you haven't yet returned your blue poem book (duotang) that went home at the end of September, please return it ASAP.  We add our October poems and resend the duotang at the end of October.
  • Lochside will be having their first Earthquake Drill on Thursday afternoon.
  • Read Around The Room starts this Friday.  Parents are invited to come in from 8:40-9:00am and read with us around the room.  Books will be out on the tables and families can read wherever they'd like with their child in our room.  If mom or dad can't make it, grandparents or others family members are welcome to attend.  If an adult can't make it, I pair up the child with a friend.  This will happen every Friday that class is in session, unless otherwise noted.  No need to sign-up, just show up.
  • There is a sign-up in the classroom to help out in various ways.  We need parents to help out each month for Fun Lunch which is this Friday.  The commitment is from 11:15am-12:15pm.  Please let me know if you can help out this week.
  • In the near future we will go on field trips that require parent drivers.  Each parent driver needs a criminal record check completed.  Now is a good time to get that done.
  • Last call for scholastic orders for October.  Online payment is now an option on scholastic but you still need to return the order form to the class.

Classroom News:

Speaking & Listening:

  • We are continuing to learn that manners are very important at school.  This week we will be reading books that teach us that we all have similarities and differences.  We will talk about how we can be better friends by being aware of each others likes and dislikes so our classroom is a great place to learn and play.

Reading & Writing:

  • Letters:

  • Last week we learned about the letters  E, P, D, S, and H.  This week we are focusing on O, U, R, and A. It is exciting to see the children use these letters when they visit the Writing Center during our center time.

Science:

  • This week we will have a closer look at our 2 'wonder' questions about fall: 1) Why do leaves change colour?, and 2) Why do leaves fall to the ground?  We will look for the answer to our questions by reading books, watching videos, and looking closely with our senses.

Music:

  • Today we had music class with Mrs. Chater.  The children are doing really well picking up the actions and words to the many new songs they are learning, as well as clapping to the beat or keeping up the rhythm without the words.

Gym:

  • We continue to work on moving safely in the gym, looking for empty spaces, trying not to bump into our friends.  This week we are exploring moving safely while trying to balance a bean bag on different body parts.  Towards the end of the week we will try out some tagging games for the first time.
