Upcoming Reminders and/or Events:

  • Today was a tough day for the Div.18 team. We really struggled to work together as a class to take care of ourselves, each other, and the space. Specifically we talked a lot about the importance of attentive listening and keeping our supplies organized and well taken care of. It affected our S.S., Math, and P.E. lessons today quite a bit so I'm hopeful for a fresh start and a better day tomorrow. I would appreciate it if you could have a gentle conversation at home to check in with your child about how they feel they are doing at being present and listening during lessons and taking care of the classroom and their supplies/work. Thank you for your support!
  • Trail Walk is on Wednesday this week from 8:50-9:20am. Families are welcome to join us!
  • Fun lunch will be on Friday.
  • Kindness assembly on Friday at 12:15pm.
  • Step into STEM opportunity from UVic
    • Dear Parents,

The University of Victoria Faculty of Education would like to invite students in grades 4-12 to participate in a free Step Into STEM event put on by pre-service teachers in conjunction with Science Venture and the Canadian Association for Girls in Science.

Our event runs from 10:00AM (check-in at 9:30 AM) until 2:30PM on Saturday February 29th and features four workshops. Students will be split into primary and secondary age categories that will be determined once projected student engagement numbers are gathered.

Teacher candidates at the University of Victoria in partnership with Science Venture and the Canadian Association for Girls In Science will lead students through a series of workshops that include:

      • Medical Sciences – basic first aid, bandaging and mentoring by medical responders and other medical professionals in the community.
      • STEM Olympics – teams of students will collaborate in order to complete a set of challenges that will test innovation, foster creativity and encourage participation of all.
      • Coding – an introduction and work period to explore online platforms that create animations and design apps.
      • Science Demonstrations – teacher candidates will introduce a variety of STEM related topics in exciting novel ways. Community experts will be invited to share about future career aspirations within their fields of practice

Registration is limited and on a first come basis. Please follow the link to sign up on Eventbrite!

What are we working on in class?

  • Math: We are cementing our strategies of multiplying with larger numbers this week by playing games, completing/marking/correcting our work, practicing math facts on Reflex, and teaching a lesson using Draw+Tell on the iPads. A lot of learning and growth is happening! Ms. Ammaturo continues to work on geometry with us on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
  • Gym: This week we are starting our basketball unit. Ask your child which team they are on and the team name they chose.
  • Reading: This month we will be focusing on non-fiction features. In Social Studies over the next month we will be learning to research, take notes, and present our learning. To support our research, we will be reviewing how to read an informational book. This wee we will be discussing using titles, table of contents, side bars, and fact boxes.
  • Social Studies/Writing: We continue our Two Worlds Meet project. This week are learning about explorers who came to explore the 'New World' after Columbus. We are learning the reasons why they went exploring and will be creating some artwork and a trading card to share our learning.
  • STEAM: We will be getting ready for Valentine's Day by creating something to collect our Valentines in. We will be planning our projects and starting to build them this week. There is a non-instructional day on Valentine's Day this year so we will be exchanging Valentines on Thursday, February 13th. I will send home a class list this week for those who wish to participate.
