Hello Lochside Families ~ It is good to be back! We have a short 5 weeks until the winter break. Some plans have been adjusted over the next two weeks regarding reporting. We will keep you updated as those plans are made.

Upcoming Reminders and/or Events:

  • Trail Walk is on Wednesday this week from 8:50-9:20am. Families are welcome to join us!
  • Early Dismissal days were to happen this week today and Wednesday but have been postponed. Stay tuned!
  • This Friday was a planned non-instructional day for students. It has also been postponed to a later date TBD. Today is a full week of instruction for students.
  • Watch your emails (and junk mail) for an invite from FreshGrade later this week. You will be invited to view your child's portfolio. Students will also be viewing their portfolios later this week. It is an ongoing conversation between the student, their families, and the teacher. You are invited to view the posts, read the feedback (I usually include something they do well and an area to work on), and there is space for you to comment back to the teacher or to your child. Please let me know if you have any questions about FreshGrade.

What are we working on in class?

  • Spelling: This week we are looking closely at vowel pairs. A vowel pair is when two vowels come together to make one long vowel sound. /ea/ and /ee/ spell the long 'e' sound, sometimes /ea/ spells the short 'e' sound. We have to pay attention to the sounding of the word!
  • Math: We continue to work on building larger numbers in many different ways - this week we are focusing on using a number line. We can use benchmarks to place a number on the number line and use that placement to help us with rounding.
  • Writing: Expert writers follow their plan to write a rough draft. After the rough draft we are working on revising and editing in order to improve our work. We are looks for details to add, remove unimportant parts, move words or sentences around, and substitute boring words for exciting ones. We are also looking to make sure each of our sentences begins with a capital along with proper nouns, as well as using appropriate punctuation and spelling. Most students have finished their first piece of writing and are going back to the start of the writing process to plan and write their second story this term. We hope to publish one story before the winter break.
  • Gym: For the month of October we'll be working on soccer skills. This week we'll be working on rules of the game before we start our tournament next week.
  • Reading: With Ms. Ammaturo we will be learning about the different genres that we may come across as readers. Knowing the genres will help us learn about which books we enjoy reading. Soon we will be learning about the different types of conflicts in stories.
  • Science: Ms. Ammaturo continues to teach us about matter - solids, liquids, and gas.
  • This week and next we will be completing the FSAs with the Grade 4s and the Grade 5s will be doing fall assessments with Ms. Norris and Ms. Ammaturo. This week we will be doing a reading and writing assessment.
