Upcoming Reminders and/or Events:

  • No Trail Walk on Wednesday this week due to our Fire Hall visit. We will be leaving by 9:00am and won't return to Lochside until noon. Please ensure your child has a good breakfast to keep them full until lunch. Also part of the activities are outside so dress for the weather!
  • Please read this important note from the office: How parents/guardians should report an absence:  To report an absence please email lochside_attendance@saanichschools.ca  You can choose to copy the email to your child’s teacher as a courtesy. If you do not have access to email, then call the school office 250-658-5238.  Reporting absences in this way helps us better track arrivals and ensure student safety. Thank you!

What are we working on in class?

  • Spelling: This week we are focusing on words with KN, GN, WR, and RR.
  • Math: We worked on a review of the concepts from the prior year last week and have some reviewing to do this week on number sense and place value. Grades 4s will be focusing on number concepts to 10 000 and Grade 5s will be focusing on number concepts to 1 000 000.
  • Writing: After using September to set the stage for writing, we are ready to get into our notebooks and get writing!
  • Gym: For the month of October we'll be working on soccer skills. We will spend 2 weeks working on specific skills, such as dribbling for this week. Our final week we will have a tournament week with games.
  • Reading: We are getting into the groove of reading in class and sticking with a book. Next up we'll be working on summarizing our reading. We use this phrase to help us: SOMEONE (the main character) WANTED BUT (the problem) SO (how did they solve it) THEN (how did the book end).
  • Tech Tuesdays: We are continuing to work through the Digital Passport games and following with discussions on some important topics such as: security, multi-tasking, privacy, creative licensing, being an upstander, and successful search techniques.
  • Science: We will be starting our first science unit this week on Matter. We will be focusing on the big idea that matter has mass, takes up space, and can change phase.
