What are we working on in class?

  • Spelling: Each week we focus on a pattern. This week the focus is words with the sound 'f'. We learned that it can be spelled 4 different ways - f as in frightened, ff as in suffer, ph as in paragraph, and gh as in enough. We are looking for patterns, synonyms, and meanings with the words this week. We also have a proofreading challenge and paragraph writing each week.
  • Math: After spending two weeks with Stanford's Week of Inspirational Math, we've got some great growth mindset lessons to get us ready to learn. The messages we heard is everyone can have a math brain, it's not about speed but about thinking deeply, there are many strategies we can use, as well as the importance of struggle and believing in yourself. We are set for a terrific year in math!
  • Writing: So far we have been exploring ourselves as writers. What do we like about writing? What do we find difficult? We also talked about the best writing environment and designed it.
  • Gym: We've been playing some whole group games in class so far. Today we played 10 second tag and Hawks and Doves.
  • Reading: We read every day for 30 minutes. We are working on our stamina. The challenge is to settle in for 30 minutes with one book. Ms. Norris checks in on us to see if we are understanding what we are reading.
  • Tech Tuesdays: We have new passwords here at school. We met with Ms. Molloy, our Learning Commons Teacher, to talk about the importance of having strong passwords. This week we'll be continuing Digital Citizenship lessons using Common Sense Media's Digital Passport online games and discussions.
