Upcoming Reminders and/or Events:

  • We had a cold, slightly wet trail walk today. Reminder to students to bring back indoor shoes for the gym as the fields are still quite muddy.
  • Class and whole school photos are tomorrow (Thursday). Every student will receive a class photo. If you would like a whole school photo, please send your child in with $10 or a cheque payable to "Lifetouch" for the same amount.

Math: This week students are continuing to work on their “dream room” project based off of the question “what type of room does Lochside School need and why?” Students have created a floor plan of their dream room drawn to scale and labelled the dimensions of each wall. Students have also calculated and recorded the area and perimeter of their rooms. Coming up next, students will begin working on presenting their dream room to the class by writing a one-minute speech. Students will work on writing persuasively to explain why their room is the best choice for Lochside.

Gym: Inspired by the upcoming FIFA World Cup, we will be focussing on developing important soccer skills in gym. This week students began to practice moving with a soccer ball by dribbling and staying in control over the soccer ball. Students will also develop their aim and accuracy skills by participating in various passing and shooting activities. We will end this unit with a Lochside World Cup Tournament. Students will work in teams of 6, choose a country to represent, and compete in mini soccer games.

Language Arts: This week students are continuing to edit and revise the rough copies of their autobiography books. In particular, students are focusing on adding more supporting details to their paragraphs and writing strong conclusion sentences. We are also examining the various ways strong writers paint a picture in the reader’s mind by showing and not telling. Students are working towards adding more descriptive details to their writing such as sights, sounds, and feelings. This week students will type the good copies of their work on school Chromebooks. The final copies will be printed off and assembled into their autobiography book complete with a title page.

Art: This week students have studied the work of Romero Britto, a Brazilian artist who uses vibrant colours and bold patterns to create paintings that express themes of hope and joy. Students are working on creating an original work of art in the style of Britto. Students are experimenting with a variety of different colours, shapes, lines, and patterns using pastels to create a piece of art that represents the season of spring.

Special Events: Over the month of February, our class has been recognizing and celebrating acts of kindness in our classroom and throughout the school. At the end of the day, students had the opportunity to share an act of kindness that they noticed with the class and add a marble into a glass mason jar to represent each act of kindness. Last month, we completely filled our jar full of kindness marbles and as a class we have been deciding on how we want to celebrate this achievement. Over many circle discussions and practicing our flexibility, our class has reached a consensus. Next Tuesday, we will celebrate by having a Pajama Potluck Movie Day. More details to come soon!
