Upcoming Reminders and/or Events:

  • I am looking for a parent to take on Scholastic orders this year. It would involve getting the book orders ready each month, putting in the order online through our class account, and handing out the books when they arrive at Lochside. If that interests you, let me know!
  • Our first Trail Walk is tomorrow (Wednesday). I would love parents to join us. You can let me know by signing up here or just show up Wednesday morning!
  • We are at the Fire Hall all morning on Friday and will be having a late lunch. Please make sure your child has a great breakfast to keep them fuelled for the long morning.
  • Litterless Lunch at Lochside: This year at Lochside we will be reducing our litter footprint in the school. One of our initiatives to reduce and reuse more is to promote a litterless lunch. It is a lunch that creates no waste! It can involve the use of reusable containers or possibly no containers at all, to store and transport food. It involves the elimination of disposable products and the encouraged use of reusable containers. Thank you for your support with this endeavour. The Lochside Green Team
  • Please see attached Traffic Safety note from the office. Let's be safe in the parking lots!
  • No school on Monday. Enjoy the long weekend with your family!

Spelling: Unit 4 this week! We are looking at words that have the /n/ sound spelled GN as in assign or KN as in known, and the /r/ sound spelled WR as in written and RR as in arrow.

Reading Studio: This week we are reading aloud for Miss Norris so we can see what we need to work on. We are also talking about our reading with peers as a check-in to make sure we are reading 'just right' books.

Writing Studio: We have revised and edited our first writing and will not be 'publishing' our first work. We set a goal to have these finished by October 13th. Students will be given lots of class time to finish. They may bring it home for homework if they do not complete it in time. They will meet with Miss Norris once finished to notice strengths and areas of growth.

Math Studio: We started our place value checklists this week. Students chose a 'just right' assignment and are completing work to show their learning, completing task cards or a game, and using Reflex Math to practice basic facts. Our aim is to complete our checklists by Friday or it will be sent home to finish.

Gym: This week we are starting our soccer unit with some skills work. We will be working on dribbling, trapping, and passing.

Computers: We will be starting a Digital Passport (by Common Sense Media) before we start using the computers this week. Each student will be given a login (using initials) and password to work through web-based games and videos to engage 3rd - 5th graders in critical skills related to digital safety, respect, and community.

  • In Twalkers, students learn why it's important to avoid multitasking with a cell phone. They consider the benefits of focusing on one task at a time.
  • In Share Jumper, students evaluate examples of online messages. They decide what information is appropriate to share and when. Students are also reminded that nothing is truly "private" or "erasable" online.
  • In E-volve, students make choices about what to do if they or their friends are cyberbullied. They are encouraged to "evolve" into an “Upstander” – someone who takes action to stop cyberbullying, rather than standing by.
  • In Search Shark, students learn how to choose effective keywords for searching online. They practice selecting keywords that are most relevant to a search prompt. Along the way, students discover hints for narrowing their search results.
  • In Mix-n-Mash, students remix media content to create a new creative piece. Along the way, they give proper credit to the artists whose images and sound clips they use.
