Important Dates and/or Reminders:

  • Welcome back after spring break! I hope families had a wonderful time together and are looking forward to the final term.
  • Please send in indoor shoes if they didn't make it in today.
  • On Tuesday this week and next we have Camosun College first year BSN RN nursing students presenting the SipSmart BC program where students will learn about sugary drinks and how to make healthy choices in a fun and effective way.
  • We will be having Lochside Trail walk this week on Wednesday morning. Feel free to sign up here.
  • Class and whole school photos are on Wednesday. Each student will receive a class photo. Whole school photos are available for purchase. An order form went home today.
  • Popcorn Day is on Friday.
  • We have space in the computer lab in the morning for Reflex Math. If your child could use some extra practice, our lab is open at 8:00am every morning and is supervised by an EA. Let me know if your child would like to use this time to practice their facts and I can put their name on the list. 

Spelling

  • Unit 20 focuses on prefixes ir, in, il, and im.

Reading Studio

  • This month for reading studio, students will be creating a 'Matchbook Summary' for each chapter they read. Each student will choose a just right novel, have it checked by Miss Norris, to complete the assignment. Students are selecting their books this week. Also this week we will be practising writing summaries in class.

Writing Studio

  • This month we will be focusing on poetry during our writing studio. We will be reading some poetry, noticing literary devices, and writing poetry as well.

Math

  • For the month of April, we will be working on decimals and fractions in math. Today we started looking at decimals and place value. Grade 4s learned about tenths and hundredths while Grade 5s take it a step further and learned about thousandths. We will work on representing, ordering, and comparing decimals.

Social Studies

  • Last term we learned about Immigration, Government, and Natural Resources. This term the students will be completing an inquiry project where they will be asked to choose a topic they want to explore further, come up with an essential question that drives their research, research to answer their question(s), and come up with a way to share their learning. This week we will be moving through the following stations with Miss Norris and Ms. Sundher to help build some skills needed for this assignment:
                • Asking deep questions
                • Effective research skills
                • Note-taking skills
                • Presenting your learning

Gym

  • This week we will be starting a floor hockey unit, focusing on stick handling, passing, and defense skills this week.

Personal & Social Responsibility

  • In our FRIENDS books this week, we moved on from F (Feelings) to R (Relaxation). We learned about 5 ways to relax our body so we are calm and ready to be our best for school, sports, and other activities.
