Important Dates and/or Reminders:

  • No Lochside Trail walk this Wednesday. We are waiting for a few permission forms to come in still.
  • Thursday will be our Terry Fox run at 10:30am. Families are invited to make a donation throughout this week to the Terry Fox donation at school.
  • Friday is Orange Shirt Day. Students and staff are invited to participate by wearing an orange shirt and to remember that 'Every child matters.' Orange Shirt Day is also an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come. You can read more about Orange Shirt Day here.
  • Friday is our field trip with the other Grade 4/5 classes to the Fire Hall in North Saanich. A permission form went home today. Since we are away all morning, there will be no Friday journals this weekend.
  • If you haven't yet, please email me with your child's name in the subject line so I can create an email list for our class.

Spelling

  • Lesson 3 studies the /f/ sound. It can be spelled four different ways. 'f' as in fifteen; 'ff' as in coffee; 'ph' as in photographed; and 'gh' as in laughable. I encourage our learners to look at the word in parts to help understand the word and help with spelling.

Reading Studio

  • This week we are looking at the genres mystery, traditional literature, historical fiction, and science fiction. That will finish up the 6 genres of fiction. Next week we will look at non-fiction genres.
Writing Studio

  • Our studio times have sure been exciting recently. The students don't want to stop writing! This week we will focus on how writers use their planning to write a first draft. Sometimes getting started is the hardest part. We looked at the first 1-3 sentences of some novels to see how the 'experts' started their stories. We noticed they tried to hook the reader with an interesting sentence that made us want to read more. Later on in the week we will look at how authors end their writing. Writers finish strong. They know that the last thing they write will be what the reader remembers most.

Gym

  • We will continue to play a variety of team-building games in gym (outside).

Numeracy

  • This week we are reviewing operations and the mathematical language and vocabulary to use to contribute to math discussions. We will also start place value. Grade 4s learn numbers up to 10 000 and Grade 5s learn numbers up to 1 000 000. We will be representing these numbers in a variety of ways: standard form, expanded form, place value chart, words, and base ten blocks. We will spend a couple of weeks getting a solid understanding of representing numbers before moving on.

Art

  • This group loves art! This week we will do a project looking at the elements of art, such as: line, shape, colour, form, texture, value, and space.
