Upcoming Dates / Reminders:

  • Last day for the Scholastic Book Fair is tomorrow (Tuesday)
  • Book Exchange is on Thursday. Please return library books before then.
  • Movie Night at Lochside 5:45pm on Thursday.
  • No Read Around the Room this Friday due to the NID, teachers only in session. This ProD day staff will be attending a writing workshop hosted at Lochside.
  • Our next field trip is coming up on Friday, May 6th to Goldstream. I am waiting to book a bus for this field trip and will send out the permission form once I do. We will be needing a few parents to join us on this trip. There will be a spot for you to indicate that on the permission form. We will be gone from 8:45am-12:30pm.
  • We have started our 'Scientist of the Day' job for our Special Helpers. We have watched a lot of great experiments and the students have done a superb job of standing in front of their peers and sharing their knowledge. If you are looking for more science experiment ideas, check out these links:

Classroom News:

  • We will continue to focus on the virtue Perseverance this week. We use stories to talk about persevering by trying, learning from your experiences, and working hard.
  • This week we are talking about the numbers 5 and 6 and will practice representing them in different ways as well as practicing how to form them correctly.
  • Last week Miss Norris asked 'Are all seeds the same?' The children enthusiastically said, 'No!' We confirmed that by looking closely at different seeds. We sketched them using our mini whiteboards with lots of details: size, shape, colour, and we even described the texture. Our next question was, 'Are beans seeds?' We thought, 'No.' Miss Norris decided to plant one to find out. The children said we need air, soil, light, and water for a seed to grow so we need those same things for our bean. We only had a container, water, paper towel, and a bright window. We 'planted' our bean in the paper towel, made it damp (Not wet!) and put it by the window. We documented what it looked like on the first day in our Science Log and will check in on it throughout the next couple of weeks. During centres, some children have planted beans as well and have them hanging in the windows.
  • We have had lots of fun playing with a parachute in the Gym. We are working on playing together, listening to one another, and working as a team to all have fun with the parachute. Last week we introduced some materials to the parachute and will continue to explore how these bounce and move on the parachute.
  • On Wednesday we will meet another member of our team at Lochside, Mrs. Fedrigo, our school counsellor. She is another adult to help us solve our problems if needed. Mrs. Fedrigo is going to introduce us to the 'Zones of Regulation.' We use this method at Lochside to help teach children self-regulation and emotional control. You may hear your child talking about being in the 'green zone' (or blue, yellow, and red). You can read more about this approach here: http://zonesofregulation.com/index.html
  • Earth Day is on Friday. As we learn about planting, seeds, and growing beans, we will use that as a starting point to talk about how we can help our Earth.
