Upcoming Dates / Reminders:
- No Book exchange at Lochside this week. Our library system is in the middle of a changeover and needs a week to get organized. Book exchange will be back on the following week.
- Read Around the Room this week on Friday, 8:40-9:00am. Parents and grandparents welcome!
- Save the Date! We are heading to the museum by school bus on February 18th and need some parent volunteers to join us. Youmust have a criminal records check done for this trip, as you will be chaperoning 2-3 students in the museum. Permission slips will be going home in early February where you can indicate if you'd like to join us. This is an all day field trip.
Classroom News:
Social Responsibility: For the next 2 weeks we will be talking about the virtue COMPASSION. This week we will learn to show compassion by being kind and asking for forgiveness.
Literacy:
- Today we watched the 'p' and 'n' Alphablocks video clips. We played with the letters we have learned so far and noticed that we can make many words: sat, sit, pat, pit, pin, etc. If you have magnetic letters at home, pull out these 6 letters and have your child play with them to create words.
- At the end of the week we will look at some poems we have been learning in class and will practice reading and tracking with our finger.
Numeracy: We have begun to look at different ways of sorting and will continue that this week. Last week we sorted objects based on colour and shape.
Science: Last week we finished up our inquiry in snow. We documented our learning by sketching a snowflake and writing 1 sentence about our learning. These will be put up in the hallway for you to see this week. This week we will be reading and viewing information on animals in winter. Our big question is: What do animals do in winter to survive? We will have discussions and choose some animals to focus on.
Gym: This week we will be focusing on kicking and trapping the ball with our feet.
Computers: Last week we went to the computer lab for the first time. We learned how to log in with our student number, practised using a mouse, and opened the program Tux Paint to explore. Today students learned how to open a folder and find a website called 'Starfall.' You can check out the website here: http://www.starfall.com/ Students explored the ABCs today.
