Upcoming Reminders and/or Events:

  • Grade 5 parents - our Camp Thunderbird meeting is tonight (Tuesday)! Come join us at 6:00-6:30pm in the Lochside Learning Commons (library) to hear about camp and have any questions/concerns answered.
  • Trail Walk is on Wednesdays from 8:50-9:20am. Families are welcome to join us on the weekly walk!
  • Early Dismissal is on Thursday, March 7th. Students will be dismissed at 1:48pm at which time our classroom will be open for an Art and Writing Show. We will be sharing our clay art tiles we created in January with our Artist in Residence. We will also be sharing our fantasy stories that we have been working on this term.
  • We need headphones! We have been exploring music creation through the iPad app Garage Band and don't have enough headphones for the iPads. If you have a set laying around the house you wouldn't mind sending in to school in a labelled baggie, or just a folded over piece of labelled masking tape, we'll put them to good use. The small white ear buds that come with Apple devices fit nicely in our iPad covers. We will keep these in students' individual supplies box. They will not be used by other students and will be sent home at the end of the year.
  • Basketball Jamboree is on Friday afternoon.

Novel Study: We continue with our novel studies on immigration and diversity. Students have been selecting book(s) to read and respond to independently and then meet up with others in Grade 4/5 who have been reading the same book to share their journal responses. Our reading studio lessons have been focusing on skills to help us go deeper with our reflections - we are working on inferencing skills and connecting the books to the bigger concepts of immigration and diversity. This week we will be starting a research project on one of the immigrant groups we have been reading about. We will be researching push/pull factors, culture and traditions, settlement patterns, and challenges and contributions in Canada.

Social Studies: This week we are learning more about how Canada became a country and how B.C. joined confederation.

Math: We continue to deepen our understanding of multiplication strategies. Grade 5s will be extending their thinking to include double-digit multiplication. Grade 4s will continue with single digit multiplication by 3 or 4-digits.

Writing Studio: We finishing up our fantasy stories this week in preparation to share them at our Open House Art and Writing show on Thursday.

Gym: We have finished our unit on basketball and will be starting badminton next. This week we will focus on racket skills.
