Hello Parents ~ I will be updating this space every Monday with some important dates and reminders as well as a brief note about topics we are studying in class. This is to keep you up to date with the happenings in our class and if you ever have some knowledge/wisdom to share that connects with what we're studying, we'd love to have you in as a guest teacher!

Upcoming Reminders and/or Events:

  • Thank you parents for sending in the many notices signed. We are still missing trail walk sheets (on the back of our class info booklet), FreshGrade forms, GSuite form (green), class info page (pink), and $5 for our agendas.
  • No Trail Walk this Wednesday....we are waiting for a few more forms to come in.
  • Orange Shirt Day is on Thursday. We invite students, staff, and parents to wear something orange. Let's come together as a community in a spirit of reconciliation and hope because every child matters. You can get more information about this important day here.
  • Individual photos are this Friday!

Here's what we're up to in class:

  • Spelling: We are looking for the sound /f/ in words this week. We are finding words like prefer, pamphlet, officer, and paragraph.
  • Gym: We have been having fun together, playing safely, and getting our exercize with some whole group games. Ask us what our favourite games are!
  • Math: After a few lessons of Inspirational Math challenges from YouCubed.org we are ready to investigate numbers. We will be learning how to represent larger numbers in many different ways - standard form, expanded form, words, place value, etc. Grade 4s learn numbers to 10 000 and Grade 5s work with numbers to 1 000 000.
  • Reading Studio: So far we have been choosing just right books to read in class and at home and are keeping track of the books we read completely or abandon (It's okay to abandon some!). We will also note the genre. Currently we are watching some movie trailers to decide which genre the story represents. So far we have noted realistic fiction, fantasy, traditional literature, and science fiction.
  • Writing Studio: In writing class each learner is writing about something that is important to them and something they know a lot about. Some are writing about memories which others are writing stories or informational pieces. Soon we will be editing and revising our writing before publishing our first piece of the year.
  • S.S.: So far we have been learning about the different types of maps and important pieces on a map such as title, key/legend, scale, and the compass rose. Have you seen the map your child created yet? They are just finishing them up and will be going home soon. Our next topic we'll be studying is government. Perfect timing with the municipal election coming up!
