Welcome Division 3 Parents to the 2017-2018 school year!
Today your child brought home a package with information about our class. I update this page every week with upcoming information about our class. Subscribe to stay up-to-date with our class happenings.
Upcoming Reminders and/or Events:
- A student info page went home to fill out for a class contact list for our class. Please return this ASAP.
- Please return FreshGrade permission forms which went home today in the info package.
- Students brought their agendas home today. I am asking students to show their parents and for you to initial that you have seen it.
Reading Studio: We visited the school library today to choose a book for our reading lessons. This week we will talk about choosing appropriate books. I also ask students to read 20 minutes each night at home. This can be a chapter book or graphic novel, reading a magazine or information book, listening to mom/dad read to them, or listening to an audio book. Reading can take on many forms!
Writing Studio: To start off we will be talking about what authors do. They write about what they know, they make decisions, and they use planning to write a first draft. We will be making lists of topics we could write about, choose one topic to talk about, plan, and start writing!
Math Studio: Today we talked about having a growth mindset in math. This week we will also be using lessons from youcubed.org's 'Week of Inspirational Math' with activities and video clips to continue our mindset discussion and learn that math can be open, creative, and visual.
Finally we have been spending a lot of time learning about our new space and figuring out how we will share the space this year respectfully and responsibly. We have been trying some 'STEM' activities and games to get to know one another and learn how to work cooperatively and peacefully. It looks like it's going to be a great year!
French: We will be having French twice a week for 45 minutes on Tuesdays and Fridays with our new French teacher, Mme. Dalziel.
Music: We will continue Music with Mrs. Alexander this year for 20 minutes on Thursdays.
Friday Journal: This Friday students will be bringing home their first Friday Journal. A letter is in the inside cover explaining the process. Basically your child will bring their Friday Journal home on Fridays for you to read and respond, like a letter. You have homework! Your response can be as brief or detailed as you would like. Students will read and respond the following Friday so these journals should come back to school on Mondays.
